My husband, son and I were driving into town today. This is a trip often taken by us on Sunday afternoons. I was the pasenger, my husband the driver, and our little J-man was in the middle snugged tight in his booster seat. As a passenger I enjoy being able to look around and enjoy the peacefullness of the coutry. We came upon a junction in which he had to cross traffic to make out turn. There was a car in the distance and we weren't in a rush, so we patiently waited until the road was clear. When the car got closer, I saw something that was very disturbing. The driver, a woman, was talking on a cellphone. Now everyone I know has a cell phone, and everyone at one time or the next has been guilty of talking while driving. This is not the disturbing part of the picture. I was disturbed by what she was doing with the other hand. What she should have been doing was holding on the the steering wheel. That is not even close to what was happening. She must have been in a heat conversation with someone, because she was pointing and making had gestures like all what not. Not once in the several seconds that I saw her did her hand touch the wheel.
At first I just looked at my husband and said "That was stupid". But as the day went on I couldn't get his out of my mind. She was driving on a road where lots of houses lie right along the road. What if she lost control, what if a little kid ran out after a ball. She would not have seen them, or if she did would not have had the proper reaction time to avoid them.
Thousands of lives each year are lost because people forget that while driving, their one and only obligation is to watch the road. Lets all think the next time we are driving and start to get distracted. Remember paying attention could just be the life-saving measure that is needed to save a loved one. _By Joni
